At MHAPB, our mission is to create a supportive community where all people can flourish.
We have created places for people to find belonging and purpose. Where they are defined by their talents and skills, not by a mental health diagnosis. And where everyone gets encouragement and support to grow and build a fulfilling life.
Here is where you belong.
“I work for Downtown Ambassador now, and we clean up the town. I used to be shy and introverted, not communicate with people. Coming to the Fern Street Clubhouse has taught me well about being sociable with people.” — Paul, Fern Street Clubhouse Member
Our History
Originally founded in 1949 as the Mental Hygiene Association, Palm Beach County Chapter, Mental Health America of the Palm Beaches has been a place of unconditional acceptance and advocacy for mental health. Guided by volunteers, donors, and staff, our Clubhouse on Fern Street in West Palm Beach evolved alongside the nation’s understanding of mental health.
From the 1950s through the 1970s
During this time, our organization was a leading community advocacy group demanding quality care for people with mental illness living in Palm Beach County.
In 1963, the county deeded our current Fern St. property to our organization, cementing our presence in the community.
The 1990s
In the 1990s, we introduced our ‘Listen to Children’ program, ushering in a new focus on the emotional wellness of children.
The 2000s
In 2001, following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, we partnered with the American Red Cross to offer support groups for residents affected by the attacks and the unfolding threats that followed. That same year, we celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Liberty Bell Gala, marking 52 years of service to our community.
As early adopters of peer support programs, we opened Peer Place in West Palm Beach in 2007.
The 2010s
The 2010s marked our transition to the Clubhouse Model, creating restorative environments that promote recovery through employment, education, and wellness opportunities.
In 2019, we celebrated Margaret Donnelley, one of our longest-serving advocates, with a countywide proclamation recognizing her 50 years of service.
The 2020s
In 2022, we expanded our service area by opening the Glades Clubhouse in Belle Glade. As we celebrate more than 75 years of service, we remain committed to building a compassionate, inclusive community where mental health is valued and supported for all.
